Compare Plans sends extracted text to OpenAI for 10 fields.
This prototype keeps your selected files only in this browser tab’s memory. PDF.js reads the PDF locally. When you open Review, extracted text is sent through the server to OpenAI to find 10 fields. The original PDF is not sent. Refreshing or closing the page clears the selections.
Go from confusing plan documents to clear insights in minutes.
Upload two health insurance plan documents.
Extract key information such as premiums, deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximums.
Compare coverage, estimated costs under different scenarios, and important tradeoffs.
Ask questions about the plans and receive plain-language explanations.
Review and edit the details for each plan before continuing.
Review your plan: Edit the five core details and check the care summaries against your PDF. Missing information stays blank or Unknown.
PDF.js reads your actual PDFs locally. On review, this text is sent to OpenAI for the 10 plan fields. Missing information is left for manual entry.
Simple check: no letters or digits = no text; fewer than 100 letters/digits per page on average = very little text. This checks text quantity, not accuracy or completeness. Page markers are excluded from the counts.

See side-by-side comparisons, explore reference-based usage estimates and maximum exposure, and understand key differences between the two plans.
Set the services you expect to use in a year.
Enter a whole number from 0 to 999 for each visit count. Your Usage is unavailable until the input is corrected.
Reference costs are population-level benchmarks, not predictions of your exact costs. Your selections stay in this tab; refreshing or closing it clears them.
Annual premium plus national reference costs for your selected healthcare usage, with the medical component capped at each plan’s in-network OOP maximum.
Reference Medical Usage: Not available
Each selected visit contributes its displayed reference cost. Expected hospitalization adds one event.
Your Usage = Annual Premium + min(Reference Medical Usage, Individual OOP Maximum).
This simplified model does not simulate deductibles, copays, coinsurance, network rules, or benefit adjudication. Prescription drug costs are excluded.
| Key Details | Plan A | Plan B |

Annual premiums plus the individual in-network out-of-pocket maximum. This is not a cap on every expense: premiums, out-of-network care, and some other costs may not count toward the OOP maximum.
Extracted service details are informational only and are not included in the calculations above. Check your PDFs for limits and exceptions.
A financial summary based on your reviewed plans and healthcare usage.
Document extraction is still in progress. Results will update when new information is available. Review the extracted details before relying on them.
Two measures: estimated annual cost and maximum in-network cost exposure.

Maximum exposure is annual premium plus the individual in-network OOP maximum. It is not a cap on all spending: out-of-network care and noncovered services may cost extra.
Making health insurance a little easier to understand.
Health insurance can be confusing.
When comparing two plans, it's easy to focus on the monthly premium. But the premium is only part of the picture. Deductibles, out-of-pocket limits, and medical expenses can make a big difference.
And finding all those numbers isn't always easy.
I created InsurChoice to make comparing health plans a little simpler.
Instead of jumping between documents and trying to keep track of everything, you can put two plans side by side and see how they compare.
You can upload insurance documents, enter the information yourself, or try a demo.
InsurChoice won't make the decision for you. My goal is to help you understand the trade-offs so you can make a more informed choice.
Hi, I'm Hwa!
I graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and minors in Actuarial Science and Geography.
I've passed SOA Exam P and Exam FM, and I'm working toward a career in actuarial science.
I've always enjoyed working with numbers, especially when they can help solve everyday problems.
InsurChoice started as a way to bring together my interests in insurance, data analysis, and technology.
Along the way, I've learned a lot about healthcare cost data, financial modeling, AI-assisted document processing, and building a tool from scratch.
It's still a growing project, but I'm excited to keep improving it.
Connect on LinkedIn (opens in a new tab)InsurChoice brings together a few simple ideas.
Upload two insurance PDFs, enter the plan details manually, or start with sample plans.
InsurChoice uses a simplified financial model to compare estimated annual costs and maximum modeled in-network cost exposure.
The results highlight where each plan may have a financial advantage.
AI helps extract information from uploaded documents. The calculations themselves follow predefined formulas, not AI-generated estimates.
The tool is designed to support decisions, not replace professional insurance advice.
Special thanks to Shenny for supporting this project and believing in the idea.
This project uses publicly available healthcare research and insurance information.
Special thanks to the organizations that make these resources accessible:
These organizations are acknowledged as data sources. They do not sponsor or endorse InsurChoice.
HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PDF.js, Node.js, and the OpenAI API.
AI-assisted development tools were also used during the project.
InsurChoice is still a work in progress.
There are more features I'd like to explore, and plenty of things I want to improve.
For now, I'm happy to share what I've built and hope it helps make health insurance a little less intimidating.
Thanks for checking it out!
